The Station 19 cast undoubtedly suffered from their fair share of extreme events and had fun with RuPaul’s drag race star Shangela and Wildlife this season, actress Barrett Doss revealed to E! that the show will take a weighted turn in today’s mid-season finale. Aside from dealing with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the series will now focus on the mounting racial tensions that have been at the center of the US over the past few months.

Today’s episode will follow the team as they encounter a mother in distress who claims her daughter was abducted and held hostage in a man’s home. Despite not being on duty, the firefighters are rushing to assess the situation, but things are quickly turning in an unexpected direction.

« What is going to be the most interesting, and possibly the most surprising and challenging part of this episode, is understanding that our heroes that we know and love, especially the black firefighters, are only black when they’re not on duty, people who like black people go through the world, « Doss told the outlet. « People don’t know they are firefighters. «

Doss, who plays the firefighter Vic Hughes, continued the complicated relationship between the black first responders and the police.

« When we’re on duty we may have a different relationship with the police department, but when we’re not on duty we definitely have a different relationship with the police department, » she said. « Sometimes being a firefighter isn’t enough. «

Similar to its parenting series Grey’s Anatomy, the spinoff has followed suit and woven real events into its fictional story. The show usually shies away from race talk, however – something that Sandra Oh, the former star of Gray, revealed was a source of tension between her and the writers during her time on the show.

« [On the show] we are of course concerned with very real traumas that exist in the world and the realities of being first responders during COVID-19, but what we haven’t experienced that much on the show is how our characters relate to their identity within the group, « she says. « I think that this particular reputation and the events of this episode lead us to question some of the relationships we haven’t explored and the parts of our relationships that make us different and struggle through those differences. «

In other first responder messages, the actress may have a potential new love story in the works for her character. However, it may not be soon. While Dean (Okieriete Onaodowan) secretly longs for the firefighter, Doss teases the feelings Vic may not reciprocate.

« I don’t think she sees Dean like that, » says Doss. « But sometimes you don’t realize that you are feeling something for someone until you do it, until they tell you [how they feel] and then suddenly you say, ‘Oh, wait. «

After her whirlwind romance with Dr. . Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) and her near engagement to Ripley (Brett Tucker) seem to Doss to believe that this may not be the best time to think about a new boyfriend.

« I just think there is too much, » she said. « There is too much on [Vics] Teller, and I think this particular traumatic experience will take everyone’s attention away from their emotional lives, although of course it could bring Dean and Vic closer together too. «
