According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the New Orleans Pelicans are acquiring Steven Adams of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Pelicans lost the reigning starting center Derrick Favors on Friday in free hand to Utah Jazz and have since found a replacement. The deal will be technically integrated into the Jrue Holiday Blockbuster as well as a draft night trade between the Pelicans and Nuggets. The nuggets sent the pelicans a protected future selection in the first round in exchange for drafting the rights to R.. . J. . Hampton, which they took with a selection from Milwaukee. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, this future first-class and two second-round players are going to thunder.

Adams is expected to start for the Pelicans ahead of the 2019 lottery. Jaxson Hayes, who is only 20 years old and quite raw. He only has one year left on his contract, however, and that opens the door for the Pelicans to promote Hayes and run Adams if Hayes earns the long-term job. Unless? The pelicans have full bird rights to Adams and thus the opportunity to bring him back above the salary ceiling.

The Thunder meanwhile took over the contract from Al Horford earlier this week. He played in Philadelphia Power Forward last season, but that experiment proved a failure. The Thunder clearly plans to play him in the middle, which made Adams dispensable. That they raised additional capital for an expiring contract that they didn’t want to keep is the cherry on top. The Thunder continues to store picks at an unprecedented rate.

Adams has spent his entire career with Thunder. It was the last remaining part of the James Harden trade that was still on the Oklahoma City list. Now that it’s gone, thunder can really usher in this new era. It will be some time before we see the finished product, but the Oklahoma City remodeling is well underway.
