Much of eastern NSW, including most of the Sydney area, faces a stormy Monday afternoon when a large thunderstorm cell swept east, bringing the potential for flash floods.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning of heavy rain and noxious winds for residents from the Blue Mountains to Gosford and the Illawarra for the entire Sydney area.

« Heavy rains, which can lead to flash floods and noxious winds, are likely, » the office said.

Among the Ares expected to be hit by 4. 20 were Parramatta, Campbelltown, Liverpool and Bowral, while at 4. 50 o’clock on the list were likely Hornsby, Sutherland, Wollongong, Sydney Airport, Sydney Olympic Park and Sydney Harbor Bridge, the warning says.

Sydney had the wettest year since 1998, with daily showers forecast for the week ahead.

Joel Pippard, a meteorologist with Weatherzone, said the storms were created by an upper trough that crossed the mountains from the central plateau of the state. Tuesday’s storms would likely be in the afternoon as well, but churned up by instability from a trough closer to the surface.

The worst falls in the Sydney area to date were 32 millimeters in Shanes Park near Penrith. The rain should have fallen in about half an hour, he said.

Commuters or others outside who are wondering whether to go home should consider delaying their trip.

« It’s a long series of thunderstorms rather than a wide one, » said Pippard. « You move pretty quickly. «

The praesidium issued a separate warning on Monday afternoon for heavy rainfall, noxious winds and large hailstones for much of northern and eastern NSW.

In particular, « severe thunderstorms can result in heavy rains which can lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash floods in parts of the Hunter district in the next few hours, potentially affecting the Central Coast and Newcastle region, » it said.

Among the wild weather reports, Nobby Hill on the south coast of New South Wales collected 50 millimeters of rain in half an hour for about 3. 3 p.m., said the office. Pictons Lakesland Road also received 24. 4mm in about a quarter of an hour to 3. 45 o’clock.
