A man is in police custody after he allegedly injured a teenage girl with a crossbow inside an Aldi in Ipswich, Queensland.

Channel 7 reports a 25-year-old man wearing “a black hoodie and a mask” had been firing a “compound crossbow” at several people before he struck the teen and was then tackled by bystanders.

Queensland Police say the man was found armed inside an Aldi supermarket in Booval after he was spotted discharging arrows while walking down South Station Road around 4.30pm this afternoon.

The man allegedly first tried to fire an arrow at a female jogger and a car but missed both of them.

“A witness has identified that male person discharge that bow, an arrow, at a female jogger who was passing by,” Queensland Police’s Heath McQueen told reporters.

“The male person has then continued on to a vehicle, it is believed that that male may have discharged that bow at a vehicle en route while he was heading towards the Aldi supermarket.”

The masked man then fired an arrow at the front of Booval Aldi, before heading inside where he fired another arrow and hit a 15-year-old girl. Inspector Scott Calcutt told The Courier Mail eyewitnesses had reported the masked man had “started firing” inside the Aldi.

“Some bystanders, members of the public, have bravely accosted that person and detained that male person until police have arrived,” Mr McQueen said.

The teenage girl has since been taken to Queensland Children‘s Hospital in a stable condition with injuries to her hands and stomach, Nine News reports.

Authorities are now appealing for anyone that may have witnessed the man or have CCTV footage of what happened to come forward.

“We are still yet to establish who that female jogger may have been, they may not be aware that a weapon was fired in her direction, we‘re still yet to establish her identity,” Mr McQueen told reporters.

“There is a vehicle that travelled through this area as well that we believe may have been fired at and we would like to talk to those people as well.”
