In Afghanistan’s three-game series against Ireland in the United Arab Emirates, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb ur Rahman could leave Australia early
Three of the top overseas KFC Big Bash players could miss this season’s final after being called up on Afghanistan’s one-day squad for the country’s first scheduled games in nearly a year.
Rashid Khan (Adelaide Strikers), Mohammad Nabi (Melbourne Renegades) and Mujeeb ur Rahman (Brisbane Heat) were selected in the Afghan squad for their ODI series against Ireland in Abu Dhabi.
The three-game campaign begins on Jan.. January, although none of these three BBL teams had set the departure dates for these players by Sunday.
Assuming the trio depart in the coming weeks, Australia’s two-week quarantine period for overseas arrivals would make a return to the finals unrealistic.
The ODI series ends on 23. January. The regular season of the BBL ends on 26. January and the final will be on 6. February played.
Your possible departures would mean significant blows to any of the three clubs as Rashid, Nabi and Mujeeb have all been winners of the game in recent BBL seasons.
Arguably the most dangerous bowler in the competition, Rashid was named ICC T20 Player of the Decade this week, while Mujeeb beat the Hobart Hurricanes, the tournament’s top numbers this season, 5-15.
Nabi got off to a slow start in the BBL10 – he had 66 runs in four innings with a hit rate of 127 and three wickets with a savings rate of over 10 before today’s game against the Perth Scorchers – but was a standout player in previous seasons and was an integral part of their BBL | 08 title run.
The Renegades have cover for Nabi in another Afghan, 16-year-old Noor Ahmad, who did not win a selection in the ODI squad.
The other Afghan player in the BBL, Zahir Khan of the Melbourne Stars, also missed the selection.
Star import Tom Banton withdrew from The Heat on the eve of the tournament, while former South African Morne Morkel has also not played due to quarantine complications and recovery from an ankle surgery.
The Perth Scorchers spin stocks have also been hit with confirmation that Ashton Agar, who injured the calf while playing in Australia’s one-day series against India, will miss the remainder of the BBL season.
« Injury to the right calf aponeurosis . . . requires a longer period of rehabilitation and we hope Ash will be ready to play in about a month, « said WACA physical therapist Nick Jones.
The three games between Afghanistan and Ireland are the first games in any format since March and the debut in the new ODI Super League of the ICC.
Ireland played their first games of the new competition, which led to qualifying for the 2023 World Cup from July to August, earning a disgruntled win over England in a 2-1 loss in the series.
