A four-wheel drive vehicle with its owner in the driver’s seat was inundated by strong waves after getting stuck near the water on a popular tourist beach in New South Wales.

The video of the wild incident on Nine Mile Beach in Lake Macquarie north of Sydney shows the Land Rover Defender being hit by a flood of breaking waves while the driver is still inside.

A shirtless man who was the passenger is seen trying desperately to attach a tow rope from another vehicle.

But as the huge waves roll on in the early hours of Sunday morning, he has to retreat several times.

The horrific ordeal was filmed by a family from Sydney who camped nearby over the weekend, Nine reported.

The video that was posted on the « I got stuck in Redhead Beach » Facebook page has now gone viral and has received a number of comments from social media users.

This wild incident, captured in the film, shows a shirtless man (pictured right) who was the passenger, desperately trying to attach a tow cable from another vehicle.

Another said, ‘Well, how stupid could someone be to drive their car in such a position?’

Chris Croat, who lives in the area and runs the Facebook page, said someone from the half-submerged vehicle ran down the beach to a campsite around 3 a.m. to ask for help.

« They finally managed to get the vehicle out of the water but had to be towed from the beach by two vehicles later that morning, » he told Daily Mail Australia.
