The Mandalorian Season 2 premiere has arrived and the world has been introduced to a new Star Wars character: The Marshal, played by Timothy Olyphant Well, « new Star Wars character » is actually a lie. have actually met Cobb Vanth before – but only book readers would be aware of his presence in this galaxy far, far away

Cobb Vanth was first introduced in the Star Wars book Aftermath, which takes place after Return of the Jedi but before the Force Awakens The novel shows the beginnings of a new government after the Battle of Endor who saw the empire destroyed

Cobb makes a relatively minor appearance in the book A Man Named Adwin Charu acts as a representative of the Red Key Raiders, a crime syndicate that sprouted on Tatooine after the death of Jabba the Hutt He meets the Jawas for mining equipment , because the union wants to work under the pretext of being a mining company, but does not reach any agreement with the Jawas Enter Cobb

Cobb agrees to help Adwin buy things from the Jawas, as Cobb has a relationship with the creatures. They look through the Jawa items, including the wreckage of Jabba’s barge, and eventually stumble upon some armor mandalorian They both want the armor, but Cobb shoots a blaster at Adwin and shoots him before he gets shot. Cobb then orders the still-alive Adwin to leave town and tell the rest of the Red Key Raiders to stop their nefarious affairs

In the second Aftermath book, Aftermath: Life Debt, Cobb makes another appearance Now the Sheriff of Mos Pelgo (this is the same town we find him in during The Mandalorian), he wears the Mandalorian armor and takes stand against the Red Key Raiders In the novel, Cobb meets Malakili, Jabba’s former beast master After some Red Key Raiders die, Malakili pretends to be innocent and Cobb decides to take the beast master – and a baby Hutt away – to Mos Pego (renamed Freetown) to start a different life

In the latest Aftermath book, Empire’s End, Cobb and Malakili work together to create a deal with the Tusken Raiders to protect the city The Tusken Raiders agree, due to the fact that the town is in a sacred location and has a Hutt – furthermore, they are promised the Pearl of a Krayt Dragon’s Interior. However, members of Red Key come to capture the city before the dragon Krayt can be killed It is then revealed that Cobb was once a slave, as he has slave marks on his back Soon the Tusken Raiders come to free Cobb from the Red Key members they then drive out the crime syndicate, and Cobb swears to protect Freetown from it

So where does the first Mandalorian fit into all of this? Well, as speculated since the release of the first Aftermath book in 2015, the armor Cobb is fighting Adwin on was actually Boba Fett’s armor. This had never been confirmed before, but it was strongly suggested in the following passage:

From the box, [Adwin] removes a Pitted and Pitted helmet, as if with some sort of acid. But still – he hits his fingers on it The Mandalorians knew how to make armor, right? « Look at this, » he said as he held it upright. « Mandalorian battle armor Entire box Full set, by its appearance I’ve been through hell and back »

Some kind of acid? Looks like it’s been in a Sarlacc’s belly for a while. In the Season 2 premiere of The Mandalorian, we see Cobb getting the armor – although he doesn’t fight Adwin’s Story Tale by Cobb is, after all, a short version

Din Djarin – the Mandalorian – meets Cobb after hunting the members of Red Key, and they again work with the Tusken Raiders to defeat the Dragon Krayt This creates peace once again between Mos Pelgo and the Tusken Raiders, but Cobb loses Fett’s armor to Djarin

Phew That’s a lot of history to reckon with But what else were we expecting? Every character in the Star Wars universe has a huge Wikipedia page, we just didn’t expect Timothy Olyphant’s character to be pre-loaded.
