Since we are only a few days away from the end of 2020, arguably the worst year in recent years, many may be wondering what the exact rules will be on New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately for those who want to say goodbye to this year in the same way as before, the last night certainly won’t be about flashy fireworks or big parties in Hungary.

The government has stated several times in recent weeks that no changes will be made to the restrictive measures currently in force for New Year’s Eve.

Prime Minister Orbán said New Years Eve parties and street parades certainly can’t happen this year, adding that for a good party, it’s not worth risking everything we’ve been working on for months.

This means that the curfew of Nov.. 00 to 05. 12:00 a.m. and the ten-person limit for meetings still apply on this day. These measures remain at least until the 11th. January in force.

Although in recent years fireworks from 31 o’clock on the 31st. December until 6 a.m. on 1. January, this will also be different in 2020. In addition to the restrictions already mentioned, the sale and use of fireworks, which are normally available on New Year’s Eve in Hungary, is strictly prohibited this year.

However, the newly adopted regulation only applies to public spaces, so it will be technically possible this year to use fireworks on private properties. However, since the pyrotechnic devices purchased last year had to be handed over to the authorities in early January and can no longer be sold, in practice not many will be able to use them.
