An urgent national recall has been issued for more than 72,000 Toyota vehicles due to concerns that a defective fuel pump could cause a fatal accident

The Australian Consumer and Competition Commission extended a tentative safety recall in April regarding a defective fuel pump, which may « increase the risk of accident, injury, or death to motor vehicle occupants and other road users »

Popular models such as Camry, Corolla, Prado and Hilux that were sold across Australia between October 2013 and October 2020 will be affected.

A safety recall has been issued for some of Toyota’s most popular models including the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (stock image)

‘If the fuel pump stops operating, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the dashboard, and the engine may not run smoothly.

‘This may cause the vehicle to stop and you may not be able to restart it

The safety recall was recently extended to additional models, raising the number of vehicles affected from 45,000 to more than 72,000

Toyota Kluger GSU50 and GSU55 models between 2017 and 2019 were the most affected by 37,546 vehicles, followed by Toyota Hilux TGN121 with 13,661

Toyota will notify affected owners in writing and will call back when parts are available starting April 2021 to arrange appointments for the part to be replaced free of charge

A statement added: “Affected vehicle owners should update their contact details with Toyota if they change so that future communications can be received.

Affected vehicle owners are advised to call the Toyota Recall Assist helpline at 1800 987 366 if they have any questions or concerns

Toyota says it will be in contact with affected vehicle owners. Pictured is Toyota Australia’s headquarters in Port Melbourne
