World News – AU – Trump presents PM Modi « Legion of Merit » for strengthening India-US relations

US President Donald Trump presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the prestigious Legion of Merit on Monday for his leadership role in promoting the strategic partnership between the two countries and India’s emergence as a world power.

Indian Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, accepted the award at the White House on behalf of the Prime Minister of the United States’ National Security Advisor, Robert O’Brien.

President Trump « presented the Legion of Merit to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership role in promoting the US-India strategic partnership, » said O’Brien in a tweet.

Modi was introduced to the Supreme Commander in Chief of the Legion of Merit, who is only handed over to the Head of State or Government.

He received the award in recognition of his unwavering leadership and vision that accelerated India’s rise to world power and strengthened the US-India strategic partnership to address global challenges.

O’Brien said in another tweet that Trump also presented the Legion of Merit to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The awards were received by their respective ambassadors in Washington DC.

President Trump « bestowed the Legion of Merit on Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for his leadership and vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific, » he said.

Trump awarded the Legion of Merit to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison for his leadership role in addressing global challenges and promoting collective security, O’Brien tweeted.

The United States is the youngest country to give the Prime Minister of India the highest honor.

Other awards include the Order of Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia in 2016, the State Order of Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan (2016), the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine (2018) and the Order of Zayed by the United Arab Emirates (2019)), Order of St. Andrew of Russia (2019), Order of the Respected Rule of Nishan Izzuddin of the Maldives (2019).
