The death toll from fire in an intensive care unit at a private hospital in southeastern Turkey rose to 11 on Sunday, Gaziantep prosecutors said.
The incident occurred at 4am. 45 a. m. (0145 GMT) Saturday in a COVID-19 intensive care unit at SANKO University Hospital in Gaziantep.
The fire was caused by the explosion of an oxygen fan. Eleven patients receiving virus treatment were taken to nearby hospitals.
About 51 people, including doctors, health workers and security guards, were affected by the fire as the patients moved, the hospital said in a statement, adding that an investigation has been initiated into the incident.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, two public prosecutors are investigating the cause of the hospital fire together with a committee of experts.
The painful incident upset us all, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter. He wished Allah mercy on the victims and said the government was closely following developments.
