Australia’s longest-serving deputy prime minister and former head of state Doug Anthony is called â ???? a true statesman?.

Mr. Anthony ran the Nationals, then known as the Country Party, from February 1971 to January 1984.

When Mr Anthony spoke to ABC after Mr Fraser’s death in March 2015, he has spoken fondly of his friend since he started out in Parliament. Both were farmers.

« He was in parliament two years before me, but we were both behind the scenes and sometimes we would go to his house after parliament and talk a little about what was going on – it was a good relationship.

« He was a good leader . . . Malcolm did a good job holding the government together. ”

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull paid tribute to Mr Anthony on social media and described him as a great Australian.

« An eloquent and dedicated supporter of an Australian republic who often shares a platform with his liberal partner Malcolm Fraser and their old Labor rivals Gough Whitlam and Bob Hawke, » he tweeted on Sunday.

Senator Matt Canavan said Mr. Anthony was “a true Australian statesman . . . with a true Australian Larrikin spirit « .

« Doug was never afraid to fight for the good of the Australians. Prayers with his family, ”wrote the Queensland Senator.

Paul McDermott of the musical comedy troupe Doug Anthony All Stars, who originally appeared together between 1984 and 1994, also paid tribute.

Mr. Anthony married his wife Margot in 1957, the same year he won the Richmond seat held by his father, Hubert, a Gallipoli veteran, and later held by his own son Larry during the Howard administration.
