As the company wonders what the future holds for Boston Dynamics, owned by Hyundai Motor Group, its robots show off their formidable capabilities in a year-end video that can also be a trick on humanity distract from their ultimate goal: total dominance on the dance floor or the extermination of all people. Both seem equally plausible.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen new robots from Boston Dynamics, but the company’s newest creation, Handle, makes an appearance on this dance-off, shaking off the counterbalance to Berry Gordy Jr. . « Do You Love Me » by The Contours.
Boston Dynamics’ most capable robot, Atlas, also demonstrates some new tricks, including effortlessly standing and balancing on one foot and performing The Mashed Potato and The Twist, including dance moves. For the most part, it’s a fun and light-hearted video, presumably intended to slowly get humanity used to machines like these, which are more common in daily life.
But the fun stops when you catch a glimpse of a hockey stick in the background and are reminded of the time Boston Dynamics shared a video of their engineers pestering Atlas with a hockey stick. They know that somewhere in this robot’s memory banks it is clinging to that moment and one day humanity will repay for making a mockery of it. Whatever happens, don’t be lured onto the dance floor.
Imagine letting this thing hit your ass and then let the running man do it.
