World News – AU – Woman killed in Mid West underground gold mine after being hit by a vehicle

. . In a statement at the market shortly after lunch, Westgold Company Secretary Lisa Smith said there had been an incident at the Big Bell mine in which an employee was involved in underground transportation activities.

. .

A worker was killed in an underground gold mine 345 kilometers east of Kalbarri after being hit by a mining vehicle.

Westgold Resources said the woman was hit by the factory mobile vehicle in the company’s Big Bell underground mine on Tuesday and died while being rushed to a Perth hospital by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Peter Cook, Westgold’s executive chairman, said the news was devastating and shaken the company to the core.

« Our hearts go out to our employee’s family and her colleagues, » he said.

« The safety and well-being of our employees are our priority. Therefore, we will ensure that a thorough investigation into this tragic incident is carried out.

« In the meantime, we will provide all of our support to your family and colleagues during this difficult time. «

Andrew Chaplyn, director of safety for DMIRS mines, said the mine safety inspectors are on their way to Big Bell.

The ASX-listed Junior WA Gold Miner will remain on a trading hold for 48 hours during the investigation. Big Bell’s operations were also suspended until the investigation.

Mining and processing activities at Westgold’s other cue operations as well as at Meekathara and Fortnum operations will continue.

The incident brings the death toll at mining sites in WA to three this year after Perth’s father Michael Johnson was killed when his sucker was killed in the Saracen Dervish mine near Kalgoorlie during the July 64-year-old Howard Prosser fell from a fall and was killed in a telescopic handler accident in January at the Roy Hill iron ore mine in the Pilbara.

The Big Bell mine was abandoned in 2003 and was inactive and flooded until three years ago when Westgold began preparing to restart mining.
