World News – AU – Wright Takes Historic Pipeline Victory at Pipeline

. .

Australian Tyler Wright claimed a historic victory when he won the first ever World Surf Tour event for women in Hawaii’s iconic Banzai Pipeline.

The two-time world champion, who eliminated compatriot Sally Fitzgibbons in the semi-finals, won a tactical battle with local favorite Carissa Moore to get her 2021 championship campaign off to a perfect start.

In a low-score final, Wright scored a 3rd. 17 in the final seconds of the finals to win the title with a two-wave score of 8. 34.

Four-time world champion Moore threatened to steal the title when she scored a 5. 40 with less than two minutes in the heat to snap the lead before Wright’s crucial final wave brought them back to the front.

A rare mid-heat mistake by Moore that made Wright a priority was also crucial as the pair competed in a remarkable ninth tour final.

Do you need a 5. 27 to take the lead, Moore was left stranded but lunged late to pull forward.

That was before Wright found the ride she needed to get back to the front and her 12th. Tour event victory was confirmed when she was back in the sand as the final results fell.

The win is Wright’s first since 2016 after a long battle with injury and illness ruined their 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Organizers have decided to move the final runs of the Maui Pro to Pipeline following a shark attack near Honolua Bay earlier this month.

In addition to winning the event, Wright will be from 19. until 28. On January 1st as the world’s number 1 stop for the tour’s second stop in Oahu, Hawaii. 1.
