The Australian couple Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons fight for a place in the finals at the season opener of the World Surf League will continue in Hawaii.
The organizers gave the go-ahead for the Maui Pro to resume in the Banzai pipeline on Monday. This is the first time a female tour event has been held during the legendary break.
The Maui Pro has been halted since a shark attack near Honolua Bay earlier this month, which moved the event into the pipeline.
The competition continues in the final quarterfinals with American Sage Erickson and Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb before Wright and Fitzgibbons compete in the first semifinals.
« This is a big day for the women, » said Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL vice president for tours and competitions.
“To be here at Pipeline, the biggest leg in Hawaii and one of the biggest legs in the world of surfing, is a great honor.
“I know the women are very excited to be here today and hopefully we put on a great show.
The competition at Pipeline already started with the men’s round of 16. The winner of the men’s and women’s event will be crowned on Monday.
