First-time MP Zak Kirkup will lead the WA Liberal Party to the March state elections after being elected unopposed after rival Dean Nalder’s withdrawal, shortly before a party room vote.
Mr Kirkup, 33, was elected Dawesville MP in 2017, replacing Liza Harvey, who resigned less than four months after the election on Sunday.
He argued ahead of the vote in the leadership that he would help revitalize the party and promised to bring hard work and energy into the upcoming state election.
Mr Kirkup takes the role just 109 days before the election and becomes the third Liberal opposition leader in less than 18 months.
The change in leadership came after polls indicated that the opposition was on the way to a serious loss of the election. Ms. Harvey said a new direction was in the party’s best interests.
