World News – AU – Zodiac Killer Cipher solved by Australian mathematician

51 years ago, the infamous Zodiac killer sent an encrypted message to the San Francisco Chronicler. It has now finally been solved by an Australian mathematician.

The Zodiac Killer code, also known as the « 340 cipher », was released on Aug.. November 1969 sent to the newspaper. It consisted of 63 characters made up of letters and symbols.

The 340 cipher has been tracking the police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and cryptologists for over five decades. But now it has been resolved.

Dr. Samuel Blake, together with computer programmers David Oranchak and Jarl Van Eycke, finally cracked the code of the Zodiac Killer earlier this month.

The team used code breaking software developed by Van Eycke to solve the puzzle. Over 650. 000 simulations were run before the. December 2020.

Dr. Blake and the team sent their findings to the FBI, which confirmed its legitimacy.

« The FBI is aware that a cipher attributed to the Zodiac Killer was recently broken by private individuals, » the FBI said on Twitter.

« The Zodiac Killer case remains an ongoing investigation for the FBI in San Francisco and our local law enforcement partners. ”

The note is supposed to match other letters the killer sent during his killing spree.

It appears that the Zodiac Killer made a mistake with the cipher, which would explain why it took so long to resolve.

« Throughout the year, through trial and error, we got around 650. 000 different reading directions tested by the cipher. That search came up more or less nothing, ”Blake said on social media.

“During one of these searches, however, a surprising combination of words was discovered: GAS CHAMBER. That such a macabre phase should emerge in a sea of ​​noise required further attention.

“From this fragment David, Jarl van Eycke and I have revised the key and corrected an error that Zodiac made in his diagonal listing of the second vertical segment of the cipher.

Despite the length of time he was murdered and numerous mocking letters, the Zodiac Killer was never identified. While the zodiac has claimed to have committed 37 murders, only 7 victims have ever been confirmed by the police officers.
