Two days after rallying 15 points down, the Knicks roared back from an 18-point hole to obliterate the Jazz 112-100 with more magic from Rivers’ late fourth quarter.
The clutch son from Doc Rivers scored 14 direct points on the track, including four straight 3-pointers and a floater, with the shot clock going down as the Knicks switched to 5-3 after winning their fifth game in six games. It’s her best record in eight games since the 2012-13 magical season.
Rivers finished with 23 points on 9 of 14 shots. Rivers was key in the fourth quarters of the last three games after missing the entire preseason and first five games of the season with a groin move.
Thibdodeau said he saw Rivers grow up as an assistant coach under Doc Rivers, when Austin was in high school. So this insane rampage doesn’t shock Thibodeau.
Thibodeau remembered Rivers going to the Celtics practice – a club with a few Hall of Fame people.
« He wanted to play them one on one, including Kevin Garnett, » said Thibodeau. “Rivers wanted to play (Kevin). Austin really thought he could hit him. «
Julius Randle got off to a very slow start before bringing the charges and recording an additional 39 minutes with the curtailed Knicks. Randle recorded 30 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists.
The Knicks also scored a massive one Performance as they started with shooter Reggie Bullock, a game-time decision with a sore knee. Bullock registered 12 points and hit 5 out of 8. Point guard Elfrid Payton stepped into the suit, adding 22 points and six assists.
A revenue-free third quarter of 34:19 brought the Knicks back from their lethargic start as they took a 78:75 lead after three quarters as they recovered from an 18-point hole on the way back. < To end the third quarter, the Knicks made two sterling defensive games that resulted in transition bands. Kevin Knox registered a rare block that resulted in Payton's fast break layup to make the Knicks their first lead since the beginning of the first quarter.
Then Rivers started his great night. He tossed the ball away from Utah’s Joe Ingles and blew Barrett away in the final seconds of the quarter to give the Knicks a 78-75 lead after three minutes and an 8-0 run.
Payton started the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to add five points to the Knicks and extend the run to 10-0. A Mitchell Robinson Dunk brought the run to 12-0 and gave the Knicks an 82-75 lead, which Rivers more than protected.
The Knicks fell 18 points in the second quarter. Randle and RJ Barrett, who finished first and second in the league in the minutes they played, looked tired from the 3-1 road trip. Utah led 56-44 through break and Barrett went 0 of 6 in the first half.
