Residents were told in an emergency warning from the Department of Fire and Rescue Services (DFES) to « act immediately to survive » when the flames hit homes near Oakford, about 22 miles south of the city center of Perth, were approaching.

Locals were instructed to evacuate when the road was clear or to seek shelter as the fire was spewing thick smoke across the area.

Around 150 firefighters were due overnight through Sunday are working to bring the fire under control from 80 to 100 acres, DFES district director Russell Wells told the media.

Although temperatures were expected to drop from their high of 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) overnight , strong gusty winds were predicted.

And the crews expected even hotter temperatures on Sunday, as it was feared that the windy conditions could double the fire.

« What we’re really trying to do right now is to get that fire under control today and have a really strong presence tomorrow so it doesn’t flare up, » Wells said.

Aerial photographs showed that at least one structure in the area was on fire when depth charges repeatedly tried to put out the fire.

Western Australia was spared the brunt of the devastating forest fires last summer, which devastated the country’s two most populous states, New South Wales and Victoria.

The fires hit more than 24 million in late 2019 and early 2020 Acres of drought-stricken bushland and forest destroyed across Australia, killing more than 30 people and destroying thousands of homes.
