World news – Australia’s first look at Teen Footy Freak

The highly anticipated rugby debut in years has come as Australia prepares to get their first look at Joseph Suaalii.

After all the wild contract requirements and fierce tug-of-war between rival codes and then rival clubs, Joseph Suaalii will enter the big time.

The youthful footy freak, hyped as a one-off talent, will be visible to everyone today when he is eliminated from the Roosters’ feeder team in an audition against the reserve class of the Canberra Raiders.

After signing with the tricolors after leaving Souths – whom he played for juniors and with whom he signed a contract before deciding to use his talents elsewhere before arriving at the NRL – Suaalii wore the colors of the this afternoon North Sydney Bears in a match that gets blasted into people’s living rooms.

Kayo Sports is broadcasting the duel, which is scheduled for an AEDT start at 2 p.m., live and exclusive, and there will no doubt be plenty of Footy fans to see what one of the most talented rugby leagues for young guns is all about Years ago.

Suaalii is only 17 years old but has already been compared to Greg Inglis for his size, speed and strength.

The student rugby sensation, who officially voted the league via the 15-man code last year, at least for the time being, impressed everyone when they trained with the Rabbitohs first class squad last year, and it has long been a question of the time, not the case, he would graduate to the NRL.

The regulations stipulate that a player must be 18 years old before making their first class debut, but there is ongoing pressure to get Suaalii into the top division before that opportunity runs around in August. That’s his talent.

Former Bunnies Enforcer Sam Burgess previously raved about Suaalii, saying he is already carrying himself like a man in the field, while ex-NSW five-eighth Braith Anasta is expecting big things too.

« Sam Burgess told me about a year ago that this kid was a superstar, » Anasta told foxsports.com.au earlier this month.

« He said, ‘He’s tough and there are kids that we know when we train and they get involved with first graders and you can see that they’re not quite ready for the collision.’

« But Sam just raved about him. From that point of view, and when he heard the people in Souths raving about him back then, there were big problems with him and big expectations and I think he’ll deliver. »

Usually a defender, the Roosters plan to ease Suaalii on matters. He’s listed to play for the bears at the centers today and can appear pretty much anywhere on the backline, including five through eight.

As a teenager at 196 cm, the teenager is already physically playing with the giant winger Daniel Tupou from Roosters, which is no easy task. Suaalii, who isn’t even allowed to drink legally, will make adult men 10 years older look small.

While there is no doubt about his physical abilities, the lingering question about Suaalii is how he will deal with the pressures of expectation that – somewhat unfairly, it must be said – are placed on the shoulders of someone so young, who is not yet first class played once.
