House parties can now hold up to 200 people, and the Ash Barty party comes to Adelaide as Premier Steven Marshall and Police Commissioner Grant Stevens celebrated their own birthday parties with a relaxation of restrictions.
There is no change to the border restrictions with NSW, however, in the hopes they can be relaxed on Jan 31 if there are no more cases after six last Sunday.
The move to increase the house party limit from 50 to 200 from midnight on Thursday was particularly aimed at families who wanted to host weddings at home. While there is a limit of 200 for weddings and funerals at event centers, house gatherings were capped at 50 regardless of the occasion.
The change is subject to conditions – there is a limit of one person per two m² in force. The parties will need a COVID Safe Plan, a dedicated COVID Marshall, and a QR code to scan that comes with the COVID Safe Plan and keep a guest list.
A jubilant Mr. Marshall, who wished himself and Mr. Stevens a happy birthday after the transition committee meeting, also announced that tennis champ Ash Barty will be playing at the Drive exhibition on January 31st that day.
« She’s a great competitor and the Adelaide International winner. She loved her time in Adelaide. She will be back and compete against the best in the world. We wish her all the best. »
Professor Nicola Spurrier, chief public health officer, noted that there were no issues with tennis players who were now quarantined in Adelaide but were allowed to train on Memorial Drive.
She said SA had recorded two new cases of COVID-19, a man in their forties and a woman in their twenties, but they were old infections.
They are counted in the sum of SA which is now 596 with five active cases because they were not counted elsewhere. Both people have returned from overseas and are in quarantine in a Medi-Hotel. They have no connection with the tennis players.
Prof. Spurrier said the decision to raise the house gathering limit is particularly aimed at weddings.
« One of the reasons we made this change is because people would love to have weddings in their homes, » she said.
« The ability to have a 200 person wedding at your home instead of having to book a wedding function center is going to be a wonderful thing for many people in our state.
Commissioner Stevens said special occasions like home weddings would likely include more than 50 people, but « we would imagine having 200 would be rare. »
He noted that issues from catering to parking resulted in such occasions typically having a limit of less than 200.
The Transition Committee will meet again next Thursday to discuss the border situation in NSW. While SA is open to most regional NSW, the hard limit is in Greater Sydney, Wollongong, the Blue Mountains, and the Central Coast.
