US President-elect Joe Biden plans to quickly extend travel restrictions for most people who have recently been to much of Europe and Brazil shortly after President Donald Trump lifted these requirements effective January 26th, a spokeswoman for Biden said.
Trump signed an order on Monday to lift restrictions he placed early last year in response to the pandemic – a decision Reuters first reported Monday – after giving support from members of the coronavirus task force and public health officials.
Shortly after Trump’s appointment was posted, Biden spokeswoman Jen Psaki tweeted, « On the advice of our medical team, the administration does not intend to lift these restrictions on Jan. 26 «
She added: » With the pandemic worsening and the contagion occurring around the world n those variations, it is not time to lift restrictions on international travel. «
Until Biden acts, Trump’s order ends on the same day the new Covid-19 testing requirements for all international visitors go into effect . Trump will be stepping down on Wednesday.
Last week, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signed an order requiring almost all air travelers to have a negative coronavirus test or evidence of recovery from January 26th Must present Covid-19 to enter the US.
The restrictions lifted by Trump have excluded almost all non-US citizens who have been in Brazil, the UK, Ireland and the 26 Schengen countries in the past 14 days – Have resided in Europe and allow travel across open borders.
The US restrictions, which exclude most visitors from Europe, have been in place since mid-March when Trump signed proclamations imposing them, while the Brazilian Entry ban was imposed in May.
Psaki added: « Indeed, we plan to take public health measures related to international travel too step up to further contain the spread of Covid-19. » The Biden crossing did not immediately respond to a call for comment on whether an expansion of the countries covered was planned.
Last Tuesday, Marty Cetron, director of the CDC’s global migration and quarantine division, told Reuters that these entry bans were an « opening strategy » to combat the spread of the virus and should now be « actively reconsidered ».
The airlines had hoped that the new testing requirements would pave the way for the administration to lift the restrictions that put travel from some European countries by 95 Percent or more reduced.
Many officials argued for months that the restrictions no longer made sense as most countries were not affected by the entry bans. Others have argued that the United States shouldn’t drop entry bans as many European countries are still blocking most U.S. citizens.
Reuters previously reported that the White House was not considering lifting entry bans for most non-U.S. Abolish citizens who have recently been to China or Iran. Trump confirmed on Monday that he would not overturn these.
