WASHINGTON – US President Joe Biden sends Senator Chris Coons to Ethiopia to meet Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and convey Biden’s « grave concern » over the humanitarian crisis in the Tigray area, where thousands are killed in the fighting Washington also said it would allocate nearly $ 52 million more to address the humanitarian crisis in the region, but called for an end to hostilities and accountability to human rights abusers.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for the immediate withdrawal of the Eritrean armed forces, an end to the use of regional armed forces by the Ethiopian government in Tigray and improved access to humanitarian aid.

Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement that Coons – a longtime ally of Biden who represents the president’s home state of Delaware – would also consult the African Union / p> « Senator Coons will express President Biden’s serious concern about the humanitarian crisis and human rights abuses in the Tigray region and the risk of greater instability in the Horn of Africa, » said Sullivan. The senator is a member of the subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Africa and Global Health Policy.
Officials in the Prime Minister’s Office and the State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Coons said he looks forward to getting in touch with Abiy and conveying Biden’s concern.

The Ethiopian Federal Army ousted the TPLF from the Tigray capital Mekelle in November after it carried out a surprise attack on its armed forces in the region bordering Eritrea.
The government said most of the fighting has stopped, but acknowledged that there are still isolated shooting incidents. Ethiopia and Eritrea have denied the involvement of Eritrean troops in the fighting, despite dozens of witnesses, diplomats and an Ethiopian general reporting their presence.
