On Sunday, 49-year-old Sacha Baron Cohen told Golden Globes viewers that last year’s Borat Subsequent Movie, the long-awaited sequel to Borat: American Cultural Insights for the Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, was released in 2006 , would be last with the beloved character.
« The gray suit is locked up and won’t come out, » Cohen said during a question-and-answer session during the virtual awards ceremony that saw three nominations – and two Victories – were awarded for the sequel to « Borat ».
The British satirist received the award for best actor in a musical or comedy film for his final round as a clumsy Kazakh broadcaster. The film itself also won a Golden Globe for Best Music or Comedy Film Category. Co-star Maria Bakalova, who played Borat’s teenage daughter – and foil for Rudy Giuliani – Tutar, was also nominated for best actress in a musical or comedy.
« This was probably the most dangerous project I had to work on, » said Baron Cohen, who previously revealed that he wore a bulletproof vest while filming among angry gun killers.
« We thought it was worth taking risks, » he said. « I was just very concerned about Trump and Trumpism and the elections and our democracy was in jeopardy. »
« There were situations that I would never go back to. The gray suit is locked and won’t come out, ”said the filmmaker.
Despite the threats to his life, 49-year-old Baron Cohen is proud of what he believes is an important work of political parody.
« If Trump had won on November 3rd and I could not have made this film , I wouldn’t be able to live with myself, « he concluded.
