World news – Breath of the Wild 2 doesn’t look that good on Nintendo Switch 2, unfortunately

Turn on your dreams

Nintendo is still up to date on Breath of the Wild 2 and didn’t release any new information about the highly anticipated sequel during the last Nintendo Direct.

However, with Link’s imminent return, those are gushing ongoing rumors of Nintendo Switch 2 – or Nintendo Switch Pro, if you like – that are refusing to go away. Speculation suggests that this is a more powerful iteration of the company’s widely successful hybrid device that enables 4K visualizations when docked.

That leaves those of us fancifully fanciful and speculating about what appears to be coming to Nintendos new switch model could be achievable. Speaking of which, we’ve often wondered what Nintendo could achieve with more powerful hardware – and thanks to the advanced performance of PC hardware and clever emulation, those daydreams sometimes come true.

Case in point: Breath of the Wild runs in 8K with ray tracing. In the following video you can marvel at what is arguably the best Switch game published so far and whose graphical fidelity is simply not possible on Nintendo’s hardware (and almost certainly not possible on Nintendo Switch 2).

The video shows the Wii U version of Links Open Air Adventure that runs on the CEMU emulator and is the work of the Digital Dreams YouTube channel. As you can see, beam-traced global lighting makes the lush landscapes of Breath of the Wild look simply sensational, and the REVO Reshade Redux mod developed by Pascal Glicher helps make the game look more lifelike than ever before.

Unfortunately it is likely that we will wait years before we ever see this level of detail in games from Nintendo. After the Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo took a different approach than Sony and Microsoft, often opting for cheaper, lower-powered hardware to take advantage of a new controller or a new design idea.

However, this idea-driven approach has paid off for Nintendo as Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo Switch have sold millions and millions of units. It doesn’t always work, of course, as the Wii U has so damned proven, although the Nintendo Switch certainly benefits from the Wii U’s library.
