Under Wayne Bennett, the Broncos assembled a team of stars of the Brisbane Rugby League and outstanding figures from Sydney for their first year.

Ipswich-born Kevin Walters was playing for Canberra when the Broncos entered the NSWRL but vividly remembers the momentous occasion.

« I was in the Raiders because the Broncos weren’t there when I got to the competition.

« The first year of the Broncos in 1988 that the world was looking at. Wally Lewis, Gene Miles, Greg Dowling, Allan Langer, Greg Conescu, Colin Scott … all of these people stood in line for the Broncos. I watched a lot We knew they would be great.

« They were up against the defensive premieres at Manly in Lang Park and they put on a show.

« I remember Alfie (Allan Langer) getting knocked out and Brett Le Man scoring the first try for the Broncos.

« It was the Wally Show. He was there in everything. They put on a great show and showed everyone that you are a force to be reckoned with. »

– Brisbane Broncos 50 (Lote Tuqiri 3, Darren Lockyer 2, Chris Walker 2, Corey Parker, Carl Webb tries; Tuqiri 7 goals) d Northern Eagles 12 (Tasesa Lavea, Scott Pethybridge tries; Lavea 2 goals)

Lote Tuqiri scored 56 tries in 99 games for the Broncos, but few appearances were better than these.

Tuqiri set a club record of 26 points when the Broncos defeated the Northern Eagles 50-12. For Corey Parker, the match was unforgettable for a number of reasons.

« I’ve only got 39 tries in my career, but I got one that day. It was in the QEII stadium and we had that aura in that stadium. You went through the tunnel and under the crowd and we had one there great record.

« Lote was in his prime. He scored three tries and scored seven goals. He was at his devastating best and got up almost single-handedly.

« I tried to chase his 26 points for a long time, but he holds the record. »

– Brisbane Broncos 30 (Karmichael Hunt 2, Justin Hodges, Darren Lockyer, David Stagg tries; Corey Parker 4, Lockyer Gates) d Canberra Raiders 28 (Adam Mogg 2, Jason Croker, Clinton Schifcofske, Alan Tongue tries; Schifcofske 4 goals)

After 18-0 at Suncorp Stadium, the Broncos stared at the noble Canberra Raiders for a heavy defeat. It was then that Bronco’s trainer Wayne Bennett came up with his best job.

« It was the 100th game for Hodgo (Justin Hodges) and we were down 18-0 at halftime, » said Parker.

« I’ve had a lot of different halftime speeches from Wayne over the years, but the ones that resonated most deeply were when he didn’t speak at all. After a normal half of football, there wasn’t much talk.

« We went out and Karmichael Hunt set up a clinic, scored a couple of tries and put 30 points on her in the second half.

« We had a big job, but we got there in the end. » The comeback remains Brisbane’s greatest and the win put them on track to reach the club’s sixth Premier League this season.

– Brisbane Broncos 15 (Justin Hodges, Brent Tate tries; Darren Lockyer 2, Corey Parker goals; Lockyer field goal) d Melbourne Storm 8 (Matt King, Steve Turner tries)

The 2006 NRL final win is still the Broncos’ youngest ever. The title drought now extends to the 15th year.

The Broncos were underdogs in Shane Webcke’s last game, but they stunned Melbourne in a gripping decision.

That made the Broncos the second fastest team to win six titles in their 19th season. Parker said the seeds for winning the flag were planted early in the preseason.

« I loved the club and the team. We had that confidence that was built throughout the 2006 season, » he said.

« After the preliminary win over Canterbury in the final, we felt really excited as a group.

« We knew we were going to be underdogs against an ardent team in Melbourne, which suited us.

« We had a senior playgroup that was non-negotiable in how we ran our business.

« Our schedule was very structured. It was easy to see what was going on but difficult to stop. We finished very well and it was a high quality game. Using Shaun Berrigan as a hooker gave us another dynamic.

« A lot of people said we couldn’t win the halfback with Shane Perry, but we did it. »

« Darius Boyd was on the wing in his freshman year. There was Karmichael Hunt and Justin Hodges.

« It was sensational for a young striker like me to be in a grand final alongside these guys in Shane Webcke’s last game.

« It was the toughest preseason I’ve had in my career. We changed everything and went to a week-long army camp. We made a bond in the group in which we didn’t want to taste defeat. »

– Brisbane Broncos 71 (Tonie Carroll 2, Justin Hodges 2, Brent Tate 2, Darius Boyd, Petero Civoniceva, Greg Eastwood, Ben Hannant, Karmichael Hunt, Joel Moon Tries; Michael Ennis 4, Corey Parker 4, Darren Lockyer 3 goals; Lockyer field goal) d Newcastle 6 (Jarrod Mullen attempt to Cory Paterson goal)

That’s how much the Broncos whipped Newcastle in 2007 to claim Brisbane’s biggest win of all time.

The Broncos ran 12 tries on a stunning Sunday afternoon at Suncorp Stadium to awe their fans.

« It’s been an up and down year after the big final win in 2006, » said Parker.

“There aren’t a lot of games that make you feel like you’re fast forward and they’re in slow motion. That’s what it felt like.

« We were pretty ordinary earlier this year. We had to get started and what a way to do that. »

« It felt like the gaps were bigger, we were faster, stronger, they were slow, everything just stuck. We played pretty fair football. »

Tonie Carroll, Justin Hodges and Brent Tate scored doubles in the 71-point carve-up while Darren Lockyer scored a field goal to rub Newcastle’s wounds with salt.
