TORONTO –
All Canadians with old paper bills in their wallets have until the end of the year to use them for everyday transactions before merchants stop accepting them.

The Bank of Canada (BoC) reminded on Thursday that hundreds of millions of banknotes worth 1, 2, 25, 500 and 1. $ 000 legal tender will be revoked from January. 1, 2021.

However, the bank says the decision to remove legal tender status from these bills will have little impact on the majority of Canadians.

« Most Canadians will not be affected as the banknotes affected by this announcement have not been made for decades and are rarely used for transactions, » a BoC said in a statement.

The BoC noted that stores can still accept these invoices as payment if they choose to.

« Money is not just a banknote, it comes in many different forms: credit cards, debit cards, checks, and mobile contactless payments. You can pay with any of these forms of money, even if they are not considered « legal tender, » « the BoC said.

While these rare bills will lose their status in the coming weeks, that doesn’t mean the banknotes are suddenly worthless.

Canadians with these stale banknotes can take them to their financial institution or send them to the BoC to be redeemed for their face value. The bank added that people can also choose to keep their older banknotes as souvenirs.

However, it is possible that more money can be made by selling the rarer notes to collectors.

The $ 500 bill is one of the rarer banknotes, and with just over three dozen bills in existence, they’re extremely difficult to come by. The value of an invoice can vary between 20. 000 and 60. According to the Canada Currency website.

The $ 1 and $ 2 banknotes were released in 1989 and 1989, respectively. No longer issued in 1996 and replaced by Loonie and Toonie. Five versions of these invoices were made before they were withdrawn from the market.

The only 25 dollar bills in circulation were issued in 1935 on the occasion of the 25th. Anniversary of King George V’s accession to the throne. issued as commemorative banknotes. Both it and the $ 500 note were discontinued shortly after they were issued in 1935.

The last count of the BoC’s bills affected since the end of 2019 is as follows:

These numbers do not include banknotes issued by the Dominion of Canada, individual provinces, or defunct or chartered banks.

The removal of legal tender status for these bills of exchange is in line with the amendments to the Bank of Canada Act and the Currency Act, approved by Parliament in 2018, to remove obsolete banknote denominations.

The BoC says the power to remove legal tender status from certain bills will help the bank better keep bills in circulation up to date.

« Newer banknotes have better security features that make counterfeiting more difficult and are generally in better condition. Keeping notes up to date means they will work more efficiently for all of us, « the BoC said in the statement.

The BoC notes that « many other countries » have been doing this for years, with more than 20 central banks around the world having the power to remove legal tender status from their debt securities, including the Bank of England, Sveriges Riksbank in Sweden and the Swiss National Bank and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

The federal government has indicated that it currently has no plans to withdraw other banknotes from circulation.

The $ 25 commemorative bill from 1935 can be seen in this image on the Bank of Canada website.

The latest version of 1. A 000 dollar banknote is shown in this picture from the Bank of Canada.
