GAITHERSBURG, Md. (FOX 5 DC) – A devastating fire in Montgomery County destroyed several townhouses late Tuesday and now 15 people are homeless just before Thanksgiving.
Sierra Fox at FOX 5 spoke to two homeowners who say they are doing the best they can, given the circumstances.
The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue received service calls around 11:30 a.m. last night. The flames spread to Whetstone Parish in Gaithersburg on Centerway Road and severely affected three townhouses.
A neighbor shared a cell phone video of the fire with FOX 5. You can see heavy smoke rising in the air.
In terms of damage, there is nothing to be saved as the attic and living quarters have been badly damaged. The windows are broken and what remains is charred framing of the houses – you can see burnt clothes hanging on the windows and the smell of smoke is still in the air.
A young woman who captured the scene says she was shocked and tells FOX 5 that she is going to high school with one of the displaced people.
“I was concerned because one of my friends lives in the house that was affected. I just wanted to make sure she was okay because her family was crying on the floor over there, « said Allison Cruz.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire. Pete Piringer, Montgomery County’s Fire and Rescue Officer, said that was something to be grateful for – the fact that they found out alive.
« They all got out. There was a working smoke alarm but usually this time of year but every time someone is injured or God forbids there is a death, but someone loses all their property and is evicted for some reason. That is always something tragic and worrying. « said Piringer.
Investigators are still working to find out the exact cause, but they believe it was electrical and unintentional.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue also wants this to serve as a reminder to ensure everyone has working smoke alarms in their home. The three families did it and that saved their lives.
« What matters most is life and people getting off. That is why we say things can be bought back, things can be fixed, once the fire alarm goes off, you cannot replace your life, once you solve the problem – get out – don’t go back for anything – stay You outside, ”said Goldstein.
