Trevor Ariza is on the move for the third time this week, traveling from Detroit to Oklahoma City with Justin Jackson of Dallas in a three-team deal.
Also in the deal, the Mavericks sent Delon Wright to the Pistons for James Johnson, a person with knowledge of the details, said early Saturday.
Ariza was dispatched to Houston from Portland two days prior to the draft and shipped to the Pistons on Wednesday evening. The 35-year-old has already played for 10 teams.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity as the deal was not announced. It was first reported by the New York Times.
The Mavericks added Johnson to add some toughness to young stars Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. Dallas was defensive on draft night, taking Josh Green from Arizona in the first round and swapping him for Josh Richardson from Philadelphia.
Point guard Trey Burke and the Mavericks agreed on a three-year $ 10 million deal to allow the free agent to return after a strong showing in the Florida NBA bubble. Burke’s appearance as one of the Doncic’s backups made Wright more expendable. Dallas acquired Wright from Memphis in the 2019 off-season.
Jackson came to Dallas in a deal before the February 2019 deadline. Its production declined during the pandemic-altered season after a strong end to the previous season after trading.
In addition to Ariza and Jackson, Oklahoma City will receive draft compensation.
Wright is the only player in the trade who doesn’t have an expiring contract. Wright has two years left on the three-year contract that was part of the sign-and-trade deal that sent him from Memphis to Dallas.
Johnson’s expiring contract was another draw for the Mavericks, who don’t have the pay cap for a big freelance agency move this year but should be in position for next summer.
