Vitamin D, a hormone processed in the kidneys, is known to help the immune system fight infections such as colds and flu

Co-author Dr Jos Hernandez, University of Cantabria in Spain, said: « One approach is to identify and treat vitamin D deficiency, especially in high-risk people such as the elderly, patients with co-morbidities and nursing homes residents, who are the main target population of COVID-19

« Vitamin D treatment should be recommended in patients with COVID-19 with low levels of vitamin D circulating in the blood, as this approach may have beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal and immune system »

Vitamin D helps control the amount of calcium and phosphate in our body, both of which are necessary for healthy bones, teeth and muscles

The benefits of vitamin D on the immune system are well known, especially when it comes to colds

Vitamin levels were measured in 216 patients with COVID-19 using a serum test at Universitario Marqu s hospital in Spain

Men were more likely to suffer from vitamin D deficiency than women, researchers found

Insufficient vitamin D has been linked to a number of health conditions damaging to bones and muscles such as rickets, falls and poor muscle strength

COVID-19 patients with lower vitamin D levels also had so-called elevated inflammatory markers, including ferritin and D-dimer

Inflammatory markers are proteins in our blood that increase as the body fights infection

Dr Hern ndez said: “Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to various health problems, although research is still being done on why the hormone affects other systems in the body.

« Numerous studies highlight the beneficial effect of vitamin D on the immune system, especially with regard to protection against infections »

But it is also found in a small number of foods, including fish, red meat, egg yolks and fortified cereals

Food supplements can also be used during the winter there is not enough sun for everyone

Adults and children over one year old need about 10 micrograms of vitamin D per day
