He took his last breath at 8:30 am today while undergoing intensive care treatment at Ad-Deen Hospital in Dhaka, Dr Nahida Yeasmin, hospital director confirmed to The Daily Star

Expressing sorrow over the death of lawyer Rafique-Ul Huq, the Attorney General and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association AM Amin Uddin told the Daily Star that his namaz- e-janaza will be held at APRIA premises at 2:00 p.m. today and it will be buried in the Banani cemetery

On October 15, the eminent lawyer was admitted to hospital with a urinary tract infection and complications from old age

In the early hours of Wednesday, he was put on life support as his condition deteriorated further

Lawyer Rafique-Ul Huq has left a son – lawyer Fahim-Ul Huq, now in Canada – and a host of admirers to mourn his death, said lawyer Abbas Uddin, a young lawyer at the Daily Star

Justice Minister Anisul Huq also expressed his deep shock and sadness at the disappearance of lawyer Rafique-Ul Huq and prayed for the salvation and eternal peace of his deceased soul

In a condolence message, he said lawyer Rafique-Ul Huq fulfilled his professional obligations with honesty and sincerity

Lawyer Rafique-Ul Huq has always assisted the court on important legal and constitutional issues, chief justice said

The chief justice also said that lawyer Rafique-Ul Huq has an unlimited contribution to the rule of law and is an institution

Rafique-Ul Huq had referred cases and waged legal battles on behalf of several politicians, including the president of the Awami League and the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the president of BNP and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in front of the Supreme Court while detained under the army-backed interim government

Born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1935, Rafique-Ul Huq graduated in law in 1960 He obtained masters and masters degrees in law from the University of Calcutta He became a Barrister- at-Law in 1961 and called the Lincolns Inn in 1962

Lawyer Rafique-Ul Huq joined the High Court of Dhaka in 1962 In 1965 he became a lawyer at the Supreme Court of Pakistan

While in the Government Legal Department, he was President of the Bangladesh Bar Council Tribunal and Bar Council Election Tribunal (1975-1976) and Bar Council of Bangladesh (1990) He was an elected member of the Executive Committee on international taxation of the World Association of Lawyers, the World Executive Committee for Foreign Trade and Investment (Washington) and Delegate of Bangladesh to the United Nations General Assembly (1990)

He was a member of the National Currency, Banking and Credit Commission and Chairman of the Banking Laws Subcommittee of the Commission which drafted the current Bangladesh Banking Laws (1984), chairman of the Company Laws (1990), Member of the Company Law Reform Committee (1977) and the Bangladesh Stock Market Improvement Committee

Lawyer Rafique-Ul Huq was active in social work He was a life member and vice-president of the Bangladesh Diabetics Association and a member of its National Council (since 1976), life member of the Society Bangladesh National Council for the Blind, President of the Bangladesh Society for the Education and Care of Hearing Impaired Children, President of the Board of Directors of BIRDEM Hospital Committee and General Secretary of the Board of Directors of Dhaka Hospital Shishu
