The nation’s cricket board has decided to introduce three new rules – Power Surge, X Factor Player and Bash Boost – in the 10th edition of the BBL that is set to begin December 10.

“I read today that BBL is introducing these new tricks, such as Power Surge, X Factor Player and Bash Boost in a misguided attempt to revitalize the tournament,” Watson wrote in a blog post on his T20 website.

“I can’t seem to understand why there are people trying to reinvent the wheel when the wheel hasn’t been broken.

Power Surge allows the hitting team to call into a two-player powerplay anytime on the eleventh day, with the usual powerplay six shortening to four sums at the start of the innings.

The X Factor, on the other hand, has the option to call up an alternate player – called either the twelfth or thirteenth player – who can substitute the batsman or pitcher after the tenth round of the first rounds.

The point system has also been changed with three points awarded for a win and one bonus point (Bash Boost) that will be shown to the chased team if it is ahead of the rivals ’points that are above 10 points.

Watson, who retired from all forms of cricket during the 13th IPL Championship earlier this month, said the changes would make the game more complex..

“The complexities that the new ‘science experiments’ will create for viewers, not to mention the players and coaches, when none of these experiences have been tried and tested at lower levels have really caused an inconvenience,” Watson said..

Watson, who retired from international cricket in 2016 and bid for the Big Bash League last year, played 59 Tests, 190 ODI and 58 T20Is, scored 10,950 points and took 291 wickets for Australia.
