(CNN) – President-elect Joe Biden stands ready to tap into the former Michigan government. Jennifer Granholm heads the Department of Energy, two people familiar with the matter, and invites a longtime advisor who has played a vital role in preparing for the debate over the years to join his cabinet.

Granholm has long had a long history of studying energy and was seen as the top candidate for Energy Secretary if Hillary Clinton won four years ago. Now she will have her chance if she is approved by the Senate.

Energy Secretary, along with Transport and other agencies, is expected to be announced later this week as Biden works to select his cabinet by Christmas.

The Biden transition team declined to comment to CNN on the selection, which was first reported by Politico. CNN asked Granholm’s team for a comment.

Granholm served two terms as governor of Michigan and was first elected in 2002. She was the first woman to be elected governor of the state, and in 2006 she was elected with the largest number of votes ever cast for the state, according to her biography page on the state’s official website.

Prior to his election as governor, Granholm was elected Attorney General in 1998 and was also the first woman to serve in this role.

Granholm, if confirmed by the Senate, would help Biden implement his ambitious energy plan. The president-elect has proposed spending $ 2 trillion on clean energy projects over four years and ending carbon emissions from power plants by 2035. The plan would create union jobs in clean energy and through projects such as building electric vehicle charging stations, upgrading power grids, expanding broadband internet access and more.

As governor of Michigan, Granholm had worked closely with the auto industry, the dominant industry in the state of Great Lakes, which could help Biden move the country towards electric vehicles.

During the 2008 financial crisis, Granholm was in the national spotlight when it pushed for a bailout for the auto industry. Biden and Granholm worked closely to implement the Restoration Act in the early years of the Obama administration. Biden often talks about doing this work to save auto jobs, many of which came from Michigan.

In addition to overseeing the country’s energy supplies, the US Department of Energy is also charged with maintaining a safe nuclear deterrent and reducing the risk of nuclear proliferation.

Granholm was a federal attorney in Detroit and was later appointed an attorney for Wayne County Corporation. Granholm began her civil service career as a clerk for Michigan’s 6. US Court of Appeals.
