Ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown for college sports last March, Syracuse was on track to miss the NCAA Championship. The Orange team has achieved a lot of roster turnover since the previous year, and although they had Atlantic Coast Conference top scorer, Elijah Hughes, defensive difficulties put them in the middle of the ACC ranking..

They finished 10-10 in team play, but the lack of bad conferences showed that they were knocked out of the tournament, according to several major parentheses.

With everyone except Hughes returning from the main tournament of last season and Alan Griffin adding the Illinois transfer, there is optimism that Orange will win the NCAA Championship and finish in the upper tier of ACC teams..

However, as evidenced by coach Jim Boheim’s positive COVID-19 test, the future of the season is both uncertain and fragile at the same time..

Below is part one of The Daily Orange’s 2020 season analysis preview, with advanced metrics from KenPom.. Com.

When looking at the modified tempo, Orange is not a team that plays fast. But they played faster last year. SU ranked 179th out of 353 D-I college teams last year, putting them close to the average. It was only the third time this decade that Orange was in the top 200 of the modified KenPom rhythm. Their average possessions per game increased by more than 66 possessions per game. 1 in 2018-19 to 68. 3 last season. Three years ago, SU was one of the 10 slowest teams in the country.

It is not clear what drives the speedup, but Boheim gave indications prior to last season that Orange will be looking to emerge in a more transitional period than it has in past seasons..

As shown in the graph below, the modified orange pace has increased steadily in the past few seasons..

Season after season, Syracuse’s opponents shoot up 3 seconds higher than nearly any other team in the country. In the past three years, SU has ranked 4th, 7th and 14th in the percentage of opponent’s shots coming from behind the three-point streak..

The defensive height and external defense have prevented Syracuse from entering the lane, and choke off mid-range jumpers – one of the country’s best defenses, according to KenPom’s modified efficiency, in 2017-18 and 2018-19. The backcourt left Syracuse from Tyus Battle and Frank Howard after 2018-19, and the SU’s defensive efficiency declined with Joe Gerrard III and Bud Boheim at the top of the area. Bohem said he saw no problem with that, but Syracuse’s defense at the top of the area was below par. According to NunesMagician. A com story that used the synergy data defensively, Buddy and Girard were in the 25th and 35th percentiles in defense last season. The orange was worse at stealing the ball and worse at blocking shots without Patel and Howard. The reduced defensive activity made it easier for violators to do what they wanted to defend Syracuse.

The SU crime jumped from 59th to 21st nationally in overall efficiency last season, with the two biggest areas of improvement being the free throw and the turnover.. Girard and Buddy both had turnover rates of at or below 15. 6% compared to Howard and Hughes who beat this figure in the 2018-2019 season. By protecting the ball and reducing coups, Syracuse has increased its attacking possession.

At a press conference last week, Boheim said he sees incoming student Kadari Richmond as the main keeper, which represents an interesting dynamic in the backcourt. While Richmond can improve Orange’s defensive output, he must limit Syracuse’s offensive faults to remain effective.. One of the main reasons Galen Curry’s time at Syracuse was so limited in 2018-19 was the turnover rate. He had 34. 1% turnover rate, more than twice as many of SU’s best ball players, along with Howard.

Capture of Syracuse 5. 5% is better than the free throw line, which doesn’t look like much, but it makes a difference in the margins. With orange less turning the ball around, the chart below shows the positive correlation with their overall attacking competence in the past nine seasons.. The value of r squared is 0. 65, which means there is a very strong correlation.

Griffin played 41. 8% of the minutes in 2019-20 for Illinois, the team that was one of the Big Ten’s best teams. But when he was on the ground, the influence of a few players was even greater. 11 Griffin. 2% rebound rate on violation and 17. 1% in defense would both take second place among the returning orange, behind only mediators Burma Sidibe. Griffin does not turn the ball much, which makes him the sixth in the nation’s offensive ranking among eligible players.

Zone 2-3 will limit how well the orange serves as a defensive kickback unit. Syracuse has ranked # 1 in defensive bounce ratio once since KenPom began tracking numbers in 2002.. But the potential front yard for Quincy Guerrier, Griffin and Sidibe could be one of Orange’s best rebounds in years.. The ability to steal additional possessions using what Boeheim called Griffin’s « high engine » is an understated aspect of building this list..

Watch this number throughout the season. The chart below traces Syracuse’s overall attacking efficiency compared to the number of assists per field goal. The square of r equals 0. 54, which indicates a very strong positive correlation. With more orange passes to prepare their offensive plays, the offensive efficiency improves.

This is the importance of conducting an attack much like the 2019-20 season, with Gerrard managing the attack, more than the stagnant attack in the 2017-2018 season which had few assists and lots of basketball alone.. As the orange passes more, they play better. The chart compares Orange’s two rankings for both offensive efficiency and assists with each ranking scored in goal.

Orange’s crime should be able to replicate last season’s success at ACC, but how far will it go to any defense from SU.
