Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government faces new questions over its relationship with the Christian College of Canada after documents revealed the private institution had granted hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans to its controversial president Charles McVety

The scandal has been harassing Premier Doug Ford for days after his government introduced pandemic legislation that would also allow Canada Christian College to grant degrees in the arts and sciences

The college is headed by McVety, a prominent Social-Conservative supporter of the Prime Minister since Ford’s run for the Progressive Conservative leadership

New documents, obtained by the Ontario NDP, revealed that McVety owed his own college more than $ 590,000 in loans while his son, college vice president Ryan McVety, was loaned $ 280,000 to move out. his home in Whitby

The financial details were part of a submission to the Post-Secondary Education Quality Assessment Board (PEQAB), which is currently assessing whether the college should be converted to a full-fledged university.

In total, the NDP found, McVety and his son owe the college $ 860,000, a figure similar to the college’s deficit in 2019 Canada Christian College is a registered non-profit and claims its entire operating budget is used to « support the advancement of its programs »

« I’ve never seen anything like it, » said NDP leader Andrea Horwath, who accused the prime minister of putting political pressure on the normally independent university accreditation process « This thing stinks throughout and it needs to be closed »

Deputy Prime Minister Christine Elliott acknowledged loan to McVety family « raises questions, » but said PEQAB would ultimately decide how to use the information

Elliott, however, expressed discomfort over any claims that his government’s support for McVety indicates support for his views, which have been described as homophobic, racist and Islamophobic.

In 2011, McVety faced backlash after complaining that it was a « crime to speak out against homosexuality » and claimed that the Toronto Pride Parade advertised the city  » as a sex tourism destination with all the possibilities of sex with hot boys »

In 2016, McVety called Islam a « war machine » and, according to the National Council of Canadian Muslims, described the religion as having a « mandate for a hostile takeover »

In 2018, McVety helped Ford win the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and later said his family « loves Premier Doug Ford »

« I feel very uncomfortable with any suggestion that our government condones any kind of racist behavior, » Elliott told reporters at Queens Park « Our government does not defend any racist or homophobic behavior »

Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca asked Attorney General to investigate charges of financial mismanagement at Canada Christian College

« It is amazing that McVety and his son borrowed hundreds of thousands of dollars from their supposed non-profit university, » Del Duca said in a statement.
