Upstart NDP could overthrow incumbent Laurie Throness, who won in 2013 and 2017 - results are not final

Chilliwack-Kent NDP provincial election candidate Kelli Paddon watches the results as they arrive on election night on October 24, 2020 (Submitted)

Upstart NDP could overthrow incumbent Laurie Throness, who won in 2013 and 2017 – results are not final

One of BC’s more uncertain provincial electoral districts, long held by BC Liberals, was ruled by an unknown relative of NDP Kelli Paddon late Saturday night

With the final results still not out, Paddon led former British Columbia Liberal Laurie Throness by a slim 11pm margin on election night with 4,353 votes to 4,033 for Throness, a margin of 341 percent on 3159 percent

With 73 ballot boxes out of 89 reported, not counting advance polls and postal ballots, which could represent half of all votes cast

Throness made headlines when he resigned from the British Columbia Liberal caucus on the first day of advance polls after the latest in a series of controversial comments on conservative social issues, statements qualified as « False and inappropriate » by party leader Andrew Wilkinson

Chilliwack-Kent has long been seen as an uncertain constituency As the ballot boxes were counted throughout the evening, the total votes between Paddon and Throness were coming and going throughout the night At one point, after 48 of 89 ballot boxes were counted, Paddon only had a seven-vote lead over Throness with 2019 versus 2012.

Paddon said she was capitalizing on her experience as an advocate The former instructor at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) said she was focusing on « the fight to improve the care of health and an economic recovery that includes ordinary people »

« This election is about the people you trust to watch over you and your family as our economy recovers from COVID-19, » Paddon says. « For years the BC Liberals have been giving tax breaks for the rich while cutting essential services British Columbians rely on As someone working with vulnerable populations I have seen how it hurts our community That’s why we need to keep moving forward with John Horgan and I’m proud to be part of the team «

Across BC, a total of 478,900 mailed ballots were returned to Election BC, as of Friday Oct 22

Due to the pandemic, more British Columbians have decided to vote by mail than ever before Election results will not be finalized until after November 6, after those mail ballots are counted An estimated number of 5,809 mail-in ballots were requested by Elections BC in the constituency of Chilliwack and 7,650 in Chilliwack-Kent There are 37,676 registered voters in Chilliwack and 43,698 in Chilliwack-Kent
