A third Gremlins film has been in the works for years, as the original film writer, Chris Columbus, said several times that he wrote a « twisted and dark » script for the film, but that made it into the has gotten into red tape in recent years to get it off the ground.
Warner Bros. . He currently has the rights to the Gremlins franchise and an animated TV series adaptation entitled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, which was lit green and set for HBO Max. But fans would still love to see a third film from the original writer!
In an interview on an episode of Collider Connected promoting Columbus’ film The Christmas Chronicles 2, the filmmaker was asked about the future of Gremlins 3 and said:
« I would like to do it. I wrote a script so there is an existing script. We’re working on some rights issues right now so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time is to watch this movie. I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not as CGI. Maybe you have – you know we had a stop motion scene in the first few Gremlins, but I don’t think I would use much CGI in Gremlins 3. ”
Fans love to hear that! A return to the original format, a film like the original, but with a whole new story. But no new developments when we’ll see it. However, it is good to know that there is a script. I’m sure the studio will hear the fans’ requests, and hopefully one day we’ll get it.
