When Craig Conover and I hopped on a Zoom call last week to discuss the new season of Southern Charm, he didn’t log in from his own home He did so from Austen Kroll’s « This is funny, because I’m doing the interview from his house, but that’s because I was downtown and it has good lighting, ”he said with his characteristic smile. so strange considering that Craig spent much of the last year living with Austen while his own house was under construction “I’m about as close as I can get to being done,” he said “It’s time to have a base again It’s been a round Just another different element of this season, which will be funny He teased the upcoming weird couple shenanigans we’re likely to see on the show

CRAIG CONOVER: It was good! I was on the Pillow Party tour for a while in the fall and winter [last year] I didn’t have a house, so I stayed with Austen when I was in town With him, always with Madison over and over. he loved the business too Neither of us really enjoyed being alone When the Pillow Party tour was over and I was relocating it was time to spend some constant time in Charleston and Austen welcomed me to stay here

But we’re different in some ways He’s actually a lot more of a monster than you might think I’m looking around today and I’m like, « This house is really clean » He’s just very specific on the where its business is going – and I’m not I don’t care I rather do it like: I’ll let things get complicated, then get someone to clean it up

So Austen and I hit it off we’re going to deal with it this season, but he’s got this thorn in his side that when Madison isn’t involved with him he’s awesome He’s happy We get along wonderfully She would tease him and let him think there was a chance they were going to come out He was diverting all that anxiety onto me, and it started to become a problem Once I invited people over and didn’t tell him ; he didn’t like it, threw my things in the yard I was like, « this isn’t going to work anymore » As hospitable as someone can be, it’s still not your place But it did exactly as you would think

Did you just have to make a deal not to talk about her relationship at all?

[Laughs] I’m sure he would love this! And yes He’s got to this point It’s a great transition into this season, and you’ll see why That’s exactly what happened We were like, « You know what? You can only get a horse to water too much This is none of our business and we don’t care « You will see, however, as things develop and bring us back in. We would have loved to have stayed out of this, but there is a reason why everyone sucks

You say Shep’s new girlfriend Taylor is the reason he’s tolerable now. Maybe you could say to Austen, “Look! She is a woman who makes a man better or who wants to be better You could have her too! « 

I mean, I think we said all that exists I wasn’t talking to Shep last winter I just sort of cut him out of my life He started dating Taylor and he started to see a therapist, and he became a 1000 times better version of himself She really makes him a happier and more tolerable person With Austen I don’t blame Madison because he has all the information he needs to make an adult decision My friend used to say to me, « Craig, it’s not that easy when you love someone « But I don’t blame Madison at all He’s an adult

Tell me a bit about doing this season without Cameran Did you miss her? What about the other girls? Did you miss them? Was it noticeable?

I mean, yeah I miss Cam We love doing this together, and I think she loves doing it too It was my rock; it was me and her and Shep from the start I haven’t really seen that constantly changing Of course I missed Cameran Losing Cam made me sad but Naomie and Chelsea it’s just ebb and the Chelsea series feeds was not going to let anyone see inside their relationship There was nothing else to say And Naomie is on her own path, which we are actually in very good at terms now I saw her at an event a few weeks ago and we chatted for 15 minutes It was really fun I kinda remember Stassi doing this with Jax on his podcast It’s been so long and we have both grown in our lives, but you also know each other better than almost anyone on the planet so we could talk about the lessons we both learned in our relationship together, how we try not to do that in the following relationships It was a good time to talk to her Miss Cam, but it’s fine The show is evolving Something else is always happening

Well, it looks like she’s gone but not forgotten We see in the first episode that Kathryn brings up the rumor of her marriage to you You immediately try to shoot her down, but I guess it doesn’t stop there Is it weird to talk about her without her being there? What is this whole experience like?

I’ve never had this before I was completely blind I hadn’t heard this rumor I couldn’t understand why Cam wasn’t with me We got on until we started the filming, then she just didn’t do it I just had no idea what was going on, then Kathryn drops that bombshell on me I almost threw up Who, I never felt that way before But it was like getting a punch in the stomach There were so many thoughts going through my head cause it didn’t make sense Either way you were going to be heartbroken It was day one, my first time back on camera this year, and I was like, wow You put a hot potato in my hands It was probably the hardest thing I’ve had to deal with on the show, or the news the most difficult, the rumor, which was thrown at me

I left, and I was like, « What the hell is going on? » I know everything, usually I’ve been here for so long that people like to tell me things, and I always know that I love to be completely surprised Not right now, but even on mountain weekends, with the stuff Danni / Madison [last season] I had never heard that either I was lying on the couch like, « Oh my god » [Laughs]

It was hard I got up and left But yeah, Kathryn, she chose me to say it And then no matter how I felt about the rumor, we were talking about it, it was there C ‘ was out of the toothpaste tube I didn’t know how to handle this because I love Cameran so much In a way you are worried because even if something is 999% wrong even the possibility you still hurt for your friend But then you look the other way, and you’re like, « Well, shit nobody wants that » You have to know if it’s over there Or maybe not! I don’t know That’s why I had to ask Leva, who is Cam’s best friend Because I was like, this giant hot potato that I have, and I have to give it to someone from other Leva and Cam were roommates, and they are best friends My biggest fear in telling Leva was that she was going to kill Kathryn I was put in a position where I love Kathryn, but I also love Cam So c ‘was hard

Oh, that was awesome! Leva has always been there The people who joined this year did a really good job And doing a great job all that was to be herself and say what you would usually say even if the cameras weren’t there You don’t play You’re just transparent I think the last few years we’ve missed it with the girls If I’m honest I don’t think they were that transparent, all of them this year they are And that’s awesome Leva and I have known each other for 10 years, and I joined her, along with her husband’s catering group last year It was fun having her She has a lot of opinions and is not afraid of them say It was a funny surprise to be around someone saying what they thought

[Laughs] Yeah Somehow it works because he’s everywhere You always forget Shep’s age until you’re with someone his age who has kids and who has ever divorced, etc. But John, he likes to party He goes from zero to 100 real fast, and you don’t know what’s going to happen He’s kind of a bull in a china store, really I just made sure I wasn’t in the shop in china but looking from the outside I was pushing him I just wanna instigate But he’s awesome He’s a super nice guy But he also has a lot of demons like all of us He does stuff that is just plain absurd and shocking He’s definitely [the antagonist] of Austen this year I’m sure Austen just wishes he wasn’t here

So we all did one thing where we shared our lives and friendships this year (@bravosoutherncharm @bravotv) It was a bumpy ride and it didn’t happen without grievances, tender feelings and ups and downs , but that’s friendship and life Either way, we put all the little things aside to celebrate the big things! It really meant a lot that this group was mostly there for the opening of @ 1stplacepub 🥇🏆 #winningatadulthood 😂 you all missed @pataltschul @wsudlersmith @venitaaspen @shadesofpinck 🥰

Awesome! In the first episode you say you won the most dramatic award in high school, but I guess your cast mates are probably giving you a run for your money now Is there anyone you would name among that? distribution to be the most dramatic?

Well, Austen was the most dramatic too We have the same picture in our yearbook I whisper to the girl who won his ear, and he too Yeah, we both won it

I mean, the most dramatic besides me? Yeah, Austen is pretty dramatic And from the encounters you’ll see this season I learned that I’m more dramatic than I thought I was Or so I was told But also, I’m like, what do you expect ? But from a reactionary point of view, it is probably Austen

Yeah You can see my HSN run on the show They actually just placed their second order with us this week, a few thousand extra pillows which was great The Thomasville line we were working on, we just It’s going really well We’ve got a few big names coming to us We’re excited to launch our vacation collection and continue to grow by becoming a household name It’s funny We had that year where we weren’t filming and I could really focus on the company By the time we got back he was luckily doing well enough that no one had anything to question anymore Shep went on to yell at someone else about his life

I just don’t know what it’s going to look like I think over the years the more I am more and more true to myself and the more transparent I am, this is a positive thing I like that people are learning more and more about me The real me I am happy to continue to share this trip with everyone This year is not the easiest, but it is cool because you will be able to actually relate to us We are going through exactly what everyone else was going through Someone was laughing at [us and] said something mean and I was like, « It’s not easy to do what we do » [It got me does] think about it, but I like it I think it’s fun I like connecting with people like we do There is definitely more that I would have liked to share with the dating world this year, but you can see a little bit I’m glad [this season] worked because obviously we were a little worried there Nobody knew what to do , but we figured it out In true Southern Charm fashion the shit hit the fan
