Season 19 of Voice kicked off with the live playoffs on Monday night as the top 17 artists battled it out for the top 9 next week. But before that could happen, hosts Carson Daly had to announce the winner of the four-way knockout round that America had voted on. Oh, and which candidate left the show shocking.

Taryn Papa from Team Blake Shelton, Julia Cooper from Team John Legend, Larriah Jackson from Team Gwen Stefani and Ryan Gallagher from Team Kelly Clarkson participated in the knockout round.

But first, Carson made the surprising announcement that Ryan would have to retire from the show and will no longer be competitive. Carson did not reveal why he had to get off, but viewers will remember that prior to his appearance on the Battle Round, Ryan announced that his mother, who has multiple sclerosis, had also been fighting the COVID-19 virus and recently released from the virus in intensive care.

That ended the competition between the three women and it was Taryn who emerged victorious, which means that Julia and Larriah sang their last song in the competition.

Hailing from Middlebury, Connecticut, Taryn began learning the piano at the age of 7 after taking inspiration from her grandfather. He taught her his favorite music: Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. This led her to sing in church and school and later to join a cover band during her studies.
