The Ford government has announced that it will be launching an online portal for parents or guardians with children under the age of 12 to receive additional financial support during school time on the Covid-19 pandemic.
From Monday, parents can fill out a simple online application via the « Support for Learners » website.
Speaking in Vaughan, Ont. Education Secretary Stephen Lecce said applications will remain open until January. 15, 2021.
« At this very difficult time, our parents have been the unsung heroes in the fight against COVID-19, whether it be examining their child before school or helping them with distance learning, » Premier Doug Ford said Monday.
« Parents were there for us and our government will continue to be there for them. For this reason, we are providing additional payments to help families fight the second wave of COVID-19 by covering some of the costs of learning and childcare. ”
As part of the Ontario 2020 budget, Ford said the new Support for Learners program will include direct, one-time payments to offset additional learning costs. This funding covers families and students attending school in person, online, or a mixture of both.

The Ford government also announced additional financial relief for families facing « new education expenditures in the COVID-19 era, » with a total of $ 380 million in support.
« COVID-19 has placed a lot of costs on families in this province, which is why we are once again providing financial support right into the pockets of working parents, » said Lecce.
“Our priority remains to keep schools safe and open and to support families every step of the way through this incredible challenge. ”
On Sunday, tests on asymptomatic students and Thorncliffe Park Public School staff resulted in the discovery of 19 positive cases of COVID-19 at the school.
Ontario reported just over 100 new COVID-19 cases to its school boards on Monday. In the last 14 days, over 3. 000 cases confirmed.
