The Grooveyard started out as a music business selling records and has come full circle with LPs becoming a popular commodity again.

« In 1987, after I was the assistant manager of the music department at Kelly’s Stereo Mart, they closed and I had the opportunity to start my own business. « explained founder LeAnne Jakubeit.

â ???? It was a little scary because I was a single mom with two kids and I never went out alone. I started sublet a small room in a stereo shop and after two years I moved into my own shop.

« Being a shop within a shop was the inspiration for the name » The Grooveyard. I was also thinking about SoundGarden, but there was a band by that name that was starting to become popular. â ????

She would soon be partnering with her current husband, Andrew Jakubeit, who had a music distribution company. The company ventured into wholesale and mail order, but kept coming back to retail. Over the years, the business has had to adapt or reinvent itself to meet fluctuating demands and trends.

For the past 30 years, the Grooveyard has always been downtown and has a large selection of music and films as well as funky novelties and rock merchandise. Regardless of whether it is a classic rock CD, a t-shirt or a poster, there is always something for the avid music and pop culture lover.

« We were fortunate to have customers who were kids when we started returning as adults with kids of our own. « added Jakubeit, who blames great people and a supportive customer base for being one of the few independent record stores still operating.

â ???? We used to sell a lot online, but then moved away from it. Now, however, we have restarted our website and online presence as this helps to keep it relevant in the future. said Jakubeit. Lots of people enjoy the store when they visit so hopefully that this can become an online experience as we are more than just a record store. â ????

To celebrate 30 years of business, various savings of up to 30% are made at various times throughout September. For further information go to www. Grooveyard. ca
