World News – CA – ‘I’m sorry’: British Columbia Liberal candidate responds to sexist joke on NDP Bowinn Ma

A British Columbia Liberal candidate for the province’s provincial election speaks publicly for the first time since a video emerged of her pranking the spending of an NDP rival widely criticized as sexist

« I’m sorry I’m sorry if people were offended, it wasn’t my intention It was a roast, » North Vancouver-Seymour Liberal candidate Jane Thornthwaite told Global News Sunday

« The party was supposed to be a fun night. In my particular case the jokes were out of place, I shouldn’t have made them »

Thornthwaite told Global News she had not spoken to party leader Andrew Wilkinson about the joke, either at the time of the roast or since then

But she received the support of her caucus colleagues and said that while she had to « do better » she had no intention of resigning

Wilkinson took to Twitter on Sunday, saying Thornthwaite was right to apologize to North Vancouver-Lonsdale NDP candidate Bowinn Ma and adding his own apology, stating that « this should never have happened »

During a Zoom ‘virtual roast’ at Sultan’s expense, Thornthwaite told a story implying that Ma used female tricks to deceive the incumbent MP at a constituency event

« Bowinn would be right next to him, cuddles, hugs, a little cleavage there, and Ralph would be mesmerized by her »

British Columbia Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson and several other party members, including candidates, can be seen laughing with the joke

The incident caused a social media storm after CKNW contributor and podcaster Mo Amir posted it on Twitter, with many highlighting he disparaged a woman of color who overcame barriers to become a political leader

Thornthwaite said she hopes the video does not discourage other women from seeking a life in politics

« I have been the subject of negative comments about my appearance myself, so I totally understand, » she said

Although Ma has yet to speak publicly about the matter, she has issued a written statement specifically highlighting this concern

« Young women deserve a province that encourages them to take on leadership roles without fear of sexism, » she wrote

« If we want more young women and people of color to enter politics, we must commit to creating environments that respect them. The comments and reactions in this video do the exact opposite »
