Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is under investigation by the Italian Football Association for allegedly using a blasphemous phrase during a league match, FIGC confirmed on Tuesday.
Federal Prosecutor Giuseppe Chine opened the investigation after the 42-year-old Buffon was overheard with blasphemous expression in Juventus’ 4-0 win against Parma last weekend when he turned to his teammate Manolo Portanova.
The incident was not reported as Buffon was not in front of the camera at the time, but there was an audio recording.
« The investigation will serve to clarify the possibility of listening to the data subject, » the FIGC said.
Since 2010, the Italian federation has taken disciplinary action against several players and coaches who have been heard disregarding God or the sacred.
Former Italian captain Buffon, who at 653 was the oldest player in the league and record holder for Serie A games, has had to apologize in the past for uttering the word « Dio » (God) despite him « Zio » (uncle) said this once claimed.
Roma’s Bryan Cristante was banned from a game earlier this month for blasphemy and curse after conceding an own goal in a league game earlier this month.
