Glenn Hoddle has urged Kai Havertz to be « more assertive » as he continues to struggle to make an impression on Chelsea.
The 21-year-old winger moved to Stamford Bridge for £ 71 million in the summer after his outstanding performance for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
But he has to repeat this form in England, as Havertz has only scored once in the Premier League.
Former Blues player and manager Hoddle spoke to the Evening Standard about how the player should improve.
« At the moment Havertz is not showing anywhere near the player he showed in Germany, » he said.
« He plays a little deeper at Chelsea and I think if he gets a little more in the box we’ll see the best of him. « .
« He’s a good player and more is to come, but he looks like a character who will need some time to settle down.
« It’s almost like he just wants to be a nice player. For me he has to be a little more assertive.
« Get in the box, hurt yourself a little in terms of its ability to get into the box. And I think he’ll score goals. «
Hoddle remains confident that Havertz will do well together with Timo Werner, who is also going through a difficult phase.
« He’s having a hard time adapting, but he’ll get there in the end, » added Hoddle.
« He’s still a young man and he’s good enough to adjust to the pace and ferocity of the Premier League.
« Werner will be back, he took a little break, but I have no doubt about that. He’s already shown enough to Chelsea fans that he’s a top player.
« I think a goal here or there and he will get back to his best. He is a first-class player, whether in the middle or in width. «
