« It’s a challenge in a male-dominated industry to tell a woman’s story from a director’s perspective and to focus on the core of something that is inherently female, » continues Johansson, citing that she is constantly on the lookout for our roles women who I think I can relate to on some level, who I empathize with If I can understand a character, no matter what their moral significance, then that’s important to me
Pugh, who plays Yelena Belova, echoes these comments, explaining that she feels the same way when it comes to the characters she plays onscreen « It has always been, sort of, the priority number one for me to find totally fascinating and totally powerful women in their own way i really want to recognize the women i play, whether it’s to recognize my mom in her, my grandma in her or my sister in her I wanna play complex and confusing characters «
