World News – CA – Mayon, Pinatubo, Taal mudslide, possible lahar as « Rolly » approaches Luzon – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines – State volcanologists have warned of possible lahar and mudslide from three active volcanoes as Typhoon Rolly threatens Luzon, and is expected to bring its high volume of precipitation

In a lahar advisory released on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said heavy rains from the typhoon could trigger lahar and muddy currents in rivers and drainage areas of Mayon, Pinatubo volcanoes and Taal

According to monitoring by the Philippine Administration of Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa), « Rolly » is expected to make landfall in Quezon Province and may even reach the super typhoon category

Currently, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No 2 is hoisted over the eastern part of Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay and Sorsogon

Phivolcs warned that heavy rains could generate lahar on the main canals draining the Mayon volcano by incorporating bulk material from residual pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits from the volcano eruption from January to March 2018

« Most of the erodible PDC deposits occupy the watershed areas of the Miisi, Mabinit, Buyuan and Basud canals, » said Phivolcs

”In addition, older and erodible eruption deposits occupy the watershed areas on the eastern and western slopes of the edifice and can be remobilized as eruptless lahars by erosion of the banks and riverbanks. channel beds «

Therefore, lahar and sediment laden fluxes can occur in the Miisi, Binaan, Anoling, Quirangay, Maninille, Masarawag, Muladbucad, Nasisi, Mabinit, Matan-ag and Basud channels

« Prolonged and intense rains can generate eruption-free lahars on the main rivers draining west of the Pinatubo volcano where significant deposits of 1991 PDCs remain on the watershed, » Phivolcs said of Mount Pinatubo at the time.

« Pinatubo lahars are probably confined to the canal and occur on the upper and middle reaches of the Sto The Tomas-Marella and Bucao river systems can evolve into muddy streams and flooding on the lower reaches and affect the adjacent communities of San Marcelino, San Narciso, San Felipe and Botolan, province of Zambales ”, he added

Likewise, the heavy rains of the typhoon can generate muddy currents around the Taal volcano, especially on the slopes to the west of Lake Taal, where “thin remains of ash can be remobilized in streams and roads. and on the slopes of the lake »

A creek and muddy runoff could reoccur in previously affected communities of Agoncillo and Laurel in Batangas province, Phivolcs said

« DOST-Phivolcs urges communities and local government units in the risk areas identified above to continuously monitor typhoon conditions and take preventive measures for their safety vis-à-vis Rolly », warned the agency
