SEATTLE: Kyle Owens scored 13 points despite struggling with his shot. Josh Vazquez scored seven of his 12 points in the last 3 minutes. and Montana stunned Washington 66-58 on Wednesday night.
Montana beat the huskies for the first time since November. 28, 1994, to close the game on a 15-5 run. It was Montana’s first win against a Power Five conference team since beating Pittsburgh in November 2017 and his first win against a Pac-12 opponent since beating Oregon State in December 2010.
Montana (2-4) ended with five players in the double digits. Owens only shot 4 out of 18 but had a lot of help. Josh Bannan had 12 points, Michael Steadman added 11 and Brandon Whitney scored 10.
Nate Pryor and Nate Roberts each scored 13 points to lead Washington (1-5), but the Huskies failed to beat a terrible first half of 33-21 behind at break. Riley Sorn added a total of 10 points for the Huskies in the second half, but the biggest problem was a quiet night from top scorer Quade Green.
Green, who averaged 17 points per game, finished the 11-11 shooting with just four points and was fouled in the final seconds.
Despite much of the night, Washington took its first lead since Jamal Beys’ 5-4 free kick, 4-26 minutes ahead. Two free throws by the Greens with a lead of 3:50 minutes gave the Huskies a lead of 53:51, but then Montana took over.
Vazquez threw down his second 3-pointer of the game to bring the Grizzlies back forward. He added a pair of free throws after Hameir Wright missed a pair for Washington, and after another empty trip by the Huskies, Whitneys 3 put the Grizzlies 2:12 ahead 59-53. Vazquez added another basket for a 61-53 lead and the Grizzlies made enough free throws in the final minutes.
Washington finished the free-throw line with just 8 of 19 points and missed all five 3-point attempts in the second half.
Montana: The Grizzlies have continued their strong free throw lately. Montana was 22 of 27 on the line. Montana only shot 58% on the line in the first two games.
Washington: The Huskies desperately need to get a hit to keep up with Green. Roberts was the only starter to score double digits, and Washington’s three other starters together scored just 10 points.
