World News – CA – New CRB Benefit Receives 25% Increase, Bringing Payments to Same Level as CERB

The federal government kicked off the new parliamentary session by bringing the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) to the same level as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), which ends as switch to employment insurance (EI)

« The Canada Recovery Benefit will help Canadians who have stopped working due to COVID-19 but are not eligible for EI and Canadians who continue to see their income from employment or self-employment reduced by 50 percent or more due to COVID-19, « Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough said at a press conference

« This would give eligible workers $ 500 per week for a maximum of 26 weeks, between September 27, 2020 and September 25, 2021 »

This is an increase from $ 400 when the program was first announced, alongside three others, in August

Anyone with this benefit can earn up to $ 1,000 per month But they will have to pay back 50 cents on every dollar earned above $ 38,000, until the benefit amount is reduced to zero

« Like employment insurance, this new benefit will be paid for the previous two weeks. This is different from the CERB, which was paid in advance »

The CRB, along with the two other previously announced benefits, the Canada Recovering Caregiver Benefit (CRCB) and the Canadian Recovering Sickness Benefit (CRSC) will be part of BIll C2 – which Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland asked other parts of the press conference

« Failure to extend the legislation we are proposing today could disrupt these payments with very negative consequences for the lives of people, families and businesses across the country »
