The Houston Texans have risen to 3-7 in the season after beating the New England Patriots (4-6) 27-20 at NRG Stadium. After the jump, this game appeared to have what it takes to be a high-flying affair between these two offenses as they each managed to find the end zone in the first quarter. However, the Patriots offensive fell silent in the first half after a 10-minute touchdown drive from 84 yards to start play for Josh McDaniels’ unit. They finished off three points in the first half and watched as Deshaun Watson flashed his brilliance and scored 14 points in the second quarter to take the lead. From there, Cam Newton and Company played from behind and couldn’t quite overtake Houston. Now any kind of late playoff push seems to be dashed.

Watson ended his day 344 yards through the air and two touchdowns, despite losing to Kenny Stills and Randall Cobb early in the competition. He relied on his tight ends in the passing game, along with Brandin Cooks, who led the team at 85 yards, and Will Fuller V, who ended up with 80 yards on six catches. Watson also added his legs to the offensive, a total of 36 yards, while scoring a touchdown run of four yards in the second quarter.

As for the Patriots offensive, while Newton looked fine passing the ball in the second half, the unit was largely disjointed throughout. He finished with 365 yards over and a touchdown while making no turnovers. Though Houston had the worst running defense in the league at week 11, Romeo Crennel’s club largely kept the Patriots’ ground play in check, reaching just 86 yards on 3. 6 yards per carry and one touchdown.

From here, the Patriots return to Foxborough awaiting a matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. In the meantime, Texans will be looking to carry this week’s momentum to Detroit when they face the Lions on Thanksgiving Week 12.

The Deshaun Watson Show: The Texas quarterback was a one-man wreck crew in the first half with a total of 241 yards of pass and two touchdowns through the air. It was also a pest brought down by Patriots Pass Rusher who bounced 30 yards on the ground and has another touchdown. Keeping him in your pocket and limiting his ability to burn you with his feet is essential for the Patriots to make a comeback.

Houston’s tight ends dominate: The Patriots have a lot of trouble bringing down all of Houston’s tight ends. Jordan Akins, Darren Fells and Pharaoh Brown teamed up for 124 yards in the first half. With Kenny Stills and Randall Cobb, they have to keep that up to fend off New England.

Patriots who attack must improve. It was a solid opening move for the Patriots, but Cam Newton and the Temporary Offense need to play more positive games. Since that 10-game opening drive for the offensive, New England have struck three times and scored one field goal. If Watson is playing as well as him, they just have to be better to keep up.
